  • The brand Moleskine as we know them today is actually a fairly recent invention. It was based on a traditional style of notebook from the 19th and early 20th centuries, but were in fact launched in the late 1990s in Italy. They were launched with a clever link to people who had used such journals in the past, and they have remained the dominant name ever since.

  • There is a long list of cultural greats that are said to have used a journal such as this. These include Picasso and Hemingway, to name but two. Arguably, though, it was Bruce Chatwin who did the most to bring them back to our awareness. He wrote about them in his book The Songlines, where he made mention of stocking up on his carnet moleskines from a little stationers in Paris. This little seed of thought led to the brand we know today being launched, drawing on this rich heritage.

  • Partly because they were the first name on the scene, pre-empting the current demand for quality stationery. However they have also done an excellent job of tying up with the artistic community. This has put them alongside contemporary artists, designers and writers. Suddenly everyone wanted to have one.

  • They have so dominated the premium stationery market that they almost define the product. This is similar to the way we talk about buying a Hoover when we actually just want a vacuum cleaner.

    They set the template for what a notebook should be - hardback cover, inside pocket, page marker and elastic strap. Gradually some other brands have added unique features to make them stand out, such as Leuchtturm with their page numbers, or Castelli and their pen loops.

  • If you are unsure on this, just go with mole-skin. Drop that silent ‘e’. Some people, possibly in Italy, might say mole-skin-eh, but we don’t go there.

  • Er, no. Moleskin is a traditional fabric, itself not made from moles. Possibly the original versions had moleskin fabric covers, but the modern incarnation of the book has a PU (polyurethane) cover material, as with all similar notebooks. It is a grained leather-like finish, but definitely not leather. Or moleskin.

  • The paper used is FSC accredited. As with most comparable notebooks, the cover uses a PU material.
