 What is foil printing?

Foil printing is a process that applies a very fine metallic foil as a print on the notebook cover. The process is carried out the same way as a blind embossing, using a metal die. The difference is that instead of applying pressure to create depth it puts a layer of metallic foil on the cover, usually gold or silver although other colours are possible. Because it is a metallic finish the impact is that much more striking!

Foil Printing Q&A

  • The process of foil printing involves applying a fine layer of metallic foil to a metal die, which is then heated and stamped onto the cover of the notebook. Unlike blind embossing, it is not stamped to create depth, but to stick the foil to the cover.

  • The process is mainly focused on using gold or silver foils, something that can’t be achieved with other printing methods. Other options include holographic foils and other colours but you will need to ask us for advice on these options.

  • There are some issues to be aware of. Not every notebook can take foil printing, and some foils may need testing before we can be sure they will work on that notebook.

    Large flat areas of foil are also a potential issue, as they will be more prone to marking and scratching. We have never had problems with foil degrading though, so this is more of a warning.

  • This is not something we currently offer.

  • Impact

    The foil finish can create a high-impact result thanks to the high-contrast of the foil against the book cover. You can achieve many different effects with foil but on the whole it will give you more impact than subtlety.

    Detail

    The detail of a foil print is fantastic and makes for a beautiful finished result.

    Tactile

    Foil printing is a physical printing process in a way that digital printing isn’t. It has a subtle feel to touch because it has been stamped onto the book.

    Metallic

    The stand out advantage of a foil print is that you can use metallic foils, something a digital print just can’t match. This also includes unusual finishes like a holographic foil.

  • We would normally recommend digital printing for any need to print a colour logo. It is taking over as the go-to print process, but there are times when it simply can’t achieve the same result.

    The main reason is that foil printing uses metallic foils and you simply can’t get this same result with digital printing.
